NAHUKU (THURSTON LAVA TUBE)

The Thurston Lava Tube is a lava cave, which is located in the Hawaii Volcano National Park. The tunnel has been closed since the May 2018 Kilauea eruption. Park officials were concerned about the cave's structural integrity, so until they can establish its safety, it will remain off limits.

While visiting the park in 2013 with my husband, we had the distinct feeling of being watched as we made our way through this huge tunnel.  As we neared the end, I took a picture of the exit without a flash.  There appeared to be a figure standing guard to the right of the cave.

Because of our anxious feeling of being watched, this could be a situation of apophenia.  It could also be a form of matrixing or pareidolia.  In any case, it's a photograph to keep and wonder about.
